Anyone with a mixer truck and a Facebook page can call themselves a concrete contractor. Most of them are fine. Some of them will pour a driveway that cracks corner to corner by the second summer, and by then they're on to the next subdivision. Knowing what to look for before you sign anything is the only real protection you have, because concrete doesn't show you its mistakes until it's already cured.
Start with the soil, not the price
Raleigh sits on Piedmont clay, and that clay swells when it's wet and shrinks hard when it dries out in August. A contractor who's worked here for any length of time should bring that up without you asking. If a slab or footing goes in on top of clay that hasn't been properly compacted, or on fill dirt that got dumped and never tested, you'll see it in a season or two as uneven settling, hairline cracks, or a slab that's pulled away from the garage threshold. Ask what base they're putting down. Four inches of compacted gravel under a driveway slab is standard around here. Ask if they're using rebar or wire mesh. Mesh is fine for a patio with no vehicle load. A driveway that'll see a car and a trailer needs rebar, especially if your lot has any grade to it or backs up to a creek.
If a contractor can't tell you what's under your existing slab or answer a basic question about drainage on your lot, that's not a small thing. That's the whole job.
Get the spec in writing, not just the price
A quote that just says "driveway, $6,200" tells you nothing. A real proposal spells out the thickness of the slab (4 inches for a driveway, sometimes 5 to 6 for one that'll take a heavy truck), the PSI rating of the concrete (3,000 to 3,500 PSI covers most residential work in this area), where the control joints go, and how they're cut. Joints should go in roughly every 8 to 10 feet, and they should be cut within 24 hours of the pour, before the slab decides on its own where it wants to crack. If a contractor skips this or says it's not necessary, walk. Concrete always cracks somewhere. Control joints just decide where.
Ask what happens if it rains the day after the pour, or the week after. Wake County gets heavy spring storms and the tail end of hurricanes moving up from the coast most Septembers. A contractor who's been doing this a while has a plan for that. One who shrugs doesn't.
Licensing, insurance, and what to actually check
In North Carolina, any job over $30,000 requires a general contractor license, and most driveway or patio jobs won't hit that number, so a concrete-specific contractor may not carry a GC license and that's normal. What matters more is liability insurance and workers' comp. Ask for a certificate of insurance, not just a verbal "yeah, we're covered." If a crew shows up in a truck with no company name on it and can't produce paperwork when asked, that's worth noting.
For anything that touches a footing, a foundation, or a retaining wall over 4 feet, the City of Raleigh or Wake County will require a permit and an inspection before you backfill or pour. A contractor who's pulled permits here before will know the drill: rough inspection before the pour, sometimes a survey to confirm setbacks if the work is near a property line. If your street has an HOA, which a lot of the newer developments around Wake Forest, Apex, and Holly Springs do, there may also be a design review before you can put in stamped or colored concrete out front. A contractor who says "don't worry about the permit, nobody checks" is telling you they've been caught skipping it before, or plan to.
Older neighborhoods versus new subdivisions
A job in Five Points or Boylan Heights is a different animal than one in a subdivision built in the last ten years. Those older streets have mature trees with root systems that have been working under the sidewalk and driveway for 60 or 70 years, plus clay sewer lines and water services that weren't mapped the way they are today. A contractor working there should know to call 811 before any excavation and should expect to deal with roots when they cut out an old slab. Newer subdivisions usually have more consistent, engineered fill under them, but the soil is often more heavily compacted clay that drains slower, so grading and drainage away from the foundation matter just as much, if not more.
Weather, curing time, and why the schedule matters
Concrete cures on its own timeline, not yours. In Raleigh's summer heat, a slab can set fast on the surface while it's still soft underneath, which is why a contractor pours early in the morning in July and August and may mist or cover the slab to slow the cure down. In winter, if there's a freeze forecast within the first 24 to 48 hours, the pour should either wait or get blanketed, because water expanding inside curing concrete does real damage. As a general rule, you can walk on a new slab after about 24 to 48 hours and drive on it after 7 days, though full strength takes closer to 28 days. Any contractor promising you can park a car on it the next day either doesn't understand the cure or doesn't care.
What to walk away from
- A quote with no thickness, no PSI, and no mention of the base.
- Pressure to sign same-day, especially with a "today only" discount.
- A deposit request over 30 to 50 percent before any work starts.
- No mention of control joints or how the old slab will be broken out and hauled away.
- Nobody willing to give you an address of a job they finished, even a few years back, that you can drive by.
